Terminal Interaction

TrizecHahn Corporation has expanded its realm of tenant amenities by adding news and information terminals in 33 of its largest office properties across the U.S. The Civia Media Terminals™, created by Civia Media Group, contain a 42-inch flat-panel screen encased in an 8-foot-tall structure and will be installed within the next 18 months.

“With today’s desire for immediate news and information, providing tenants with another opportunity to receive information is clearly a plus,” says Antonio Bismonte, TrizecHahn’s executive vice president of leasing and operations.

The terminals will offer targeted news, information on local attractions, traffic and weather reports, advertising and building-specific information like a tenant registry, Bismonte says. While Civia controls a large part of the content, TrizecHahn can customize the content via a secure web site, says Civia president and chief executive officer Scott Herrmann. Civia receives a monthly service fee for the installed terminals. The terminal screen is divided into four viewing zones, allowing people at a distance to scan headlines and announcements and those up close to use touch-screen buttons to get more in-depth information.

Bismonte says TrizecHahn plans to utilize some branding opportunities and offer targeted local advertising opportunities to tenants. TrizecHahn will evaluate the success of the initial terminals before deciding to expand the program, Bismonte says.

This is Civia’s first deal with a real estate company, but Herrmann says the company is in negotiations with several other property owners and expects to have “thousands of terminals” in commercial buildings and public locations by 2004. Prior to the TrizecHahn deal, Seattle-based Civia had 40 terminals installed in the Seattle and Portland, WA area.
