UDR, Inc.

ADDISON, TX
Vitruvian Park
UDR has embarked on a portfolio-wide sustainability program to develop and operate green and sustainable residential properties that reduce its operational impact on the environment. The program’s umbrella mission is to transform UDR, an EnergyStar partner, into the most sustainable owner and operator of multifamily communities in the U.S.

Sustainability initiatives are incorporated into all aspects of UDR’s business. The company is reducing energy use, water consumption and its contribution to the waste stream, and is making environmentally preferable material and product choices that enhance both indoor and outdoor environmental quality for residents.

UDR is pursuing LEED certifications and collaborating with the U.S. Green Building Council to assure that new communities are developed to the highest standard of sustainability.
For example, to reduce energy consumption and associated costs, UDR is installing EnergyStar-qualified lighting, appliances and equipment. To improve water efficiency, it is utilizing water-efficient landscaping and low-flow fixtures. Additionally, recycling programs are being instituted across the portfolio, with reductions measured and savings documented. The company also is providing comprehensive training and education for all staff and vendors to help them integrate its sustainability practices into everyday decision-making, and is solidifying sustainability as part of its culture.

UDR is pursuing LEED certifications and collaborating with the U.S. Green Building Council to assure that new communities are developed to the highest standard of sustainability.

UDR’s Vitruvian project—a 100 acre, mixed-use development in Addison, Texas—is targeted to be the most environmentally-friendly community of its kind. Green practices include the reuse of demolition materials; diversion of construction waste from landfills; reduction of typical water consumption by 30 percent; and conservation of energy. UDR expects to pursue LEED certification for the project.

Vitruvian Park also participates in a new green-initiative program created by the Town of Addison. The program is the city’s own hybrid of EnergyStar and LEED standards aimed at maximizing efficiency and minimizing environmental impact. These standards will be reflected in all of the 5,500 dwelling units and 300,000 square feet of office and retail space throughout the project.

“UDR’s sustainability program brings unprecedented value to our residents. By choosing to live in a green community, their quality of life is enhanced while utility costs are lowered,” says Doug Walker, senior vice president of the company. “Our sustainability efforts will reduce turnover, increase occupancy and attract increased interest from residents. All of these endeavors will confirm UDR as both an operational and sustainability leader for our industry.”
