RealAccess Alliance Testifies
Winstar Communications Inc. has successfully negotiated access rights to over 8,000 buildings nationwide, making it the industry leader in telecommunications, so testified Timothy Graham, general counsel and executive vice president of the telecommunications firm before the House Subcommittee on the Constitution on March 21, 2000. Yet, in spite of this obvious success, the telecommunications leader is asking Congress to support forced building access. [July/August, 2000]

Investors are putting their John Hancock on the new John Hancock Real Estate Mutual Fund that made its public debut in March 2000. [July/August, 2000]

South Korea Explores REITs
After a successful showing in mutual funds and securitization, South Korean officials are pursing a new avenue of investment, the Real Estate Investment Trust.

"We expect REIT legislation to be passed late this year," said Kyu Jin Kim, asset backed securities team head, Structured Products Dept., Daewoo Securities, Seoul, South Korea, adding that the late passage will allow for almost a full year to prepare before a deal is closed. [July/August, 2000]

Fannie May I? Financing REITs
REITs looking for competitive financing might find a friend in Fannie Mae. To date, Fannie Mae has closed on over $6 billion in REIT-related multi-family mortgages including $650 million to provide debt financing for the merger of Olympus Real Estate Corporation with Walden Residential Properties Inc.
